Your Rights as a Sri Lankan Migrant Worker
A general overview of protections migrant workers are typically entitled to — always confirm specifics with SLBFE for your situation.
A written contract
You are generally entitled to a written employment contract, ideally explained to you in a language you understand, before you depart. It should clearly state your job role, salary, working hours, leave entitlements, and accommodation arrangements.
Insurance and welfare coverage
Registered migrant workers are typically covered under welfare and insurance schemes intended to provide support in case of illness, injury, or other emergencies while working abroad. Ask your agency to explain what coverage applies to you specifically.
Pre-departure orientation
Sri Lanka's foreign employment framework generally includes orientation/training before departure, meant to prepare workers with practical information about their destination country, rights, and who to contact in an emergency. Take this seriously — it exists for your protection.
The right to say no
You are never obligated to accept a job offer, sign a contract, or make a payment just because you've started a conversation with an agency. Take your time, verify the agency, and involve family or trusted advisors in the decision.
Support while abroad
If you experience problems while working abroad — unpaid wages, unsafe conditions, contract violations, or abuse — Sri Lankan missions abroad and SLBFE are meant to be points of contact for assistance. Keep their contact details with you, along with your agency's license number and contract copy.
